LVT has become the most asked-for floor in New Invention kitchens, hallways and bathrooms, and it is easy to see why: it is warm underfoot, copes with water, and looks convincingly like wood or stone. It is also the floor that shows a poor subfloor more than any other.
Glue-down LVT is thin, so every bump, ridge and old tile edge underneath telegraphs straight through within a few weeks. In New Invention houses the subfloor is usually either a concrete slab that has been patched over the years, or boards and chipboard upstairs. Concrete gets levelled with a smoothing compound; timber gets a ply overlay screwed down properly.
Click LVT is more forgiving and can float over a sound floor, but it still needs to be flat within a few millimetres across a metre, and it needs the right underlay for the room.
The layout matters as much as the product. Planks run the length of the longest view, cuts go to the least visible wall, and a New Invention kitchen-diner is laid as one floor rather than two rooms that happen to meet. Doors are trimmed where the new floor raises the level, and the thresholds are finished with proper trims.
Wear layer is the number worth checking when you choose LVT. It is the clear top layer that takes the traffic, and for a New Invention kitchen or hallway with children and pets a thicker wear layer is money well spent. A thin one looks identical in the showroom and shows scuffs within a year. We are happy to look at samples with you and explain what each one is actually made of before you buy. A floor that bounces, boards that creak and shift, or damp coming up through a solid floor are worth sorting before anything new goes down.
